TIGER WOODS SIGNS DEAL WITH ELECTRONIC ARTS TO DEVELOP INTERACTIVE GOLF GAME SERIES
License to Further Boost EA SPORTS' Position in International Golf Game Market
SAN MATEO, Calif. - February 19, 1998 -- Electronic Arts™ (Nasdaq:ERTS), a leading global computer and video game software company, today announced that it signed a worldwide license for the interactive entertainment rights to international golf phenomenon Tiger Woods. EA SPORTS™ plans to further solidify its premier position in the interactive golf market with the release of a Tiger Woods golf game for the personal computer and the PlayStationä game console this summer. Financial terms of the four-year agreement were not disclosed.
"I am thrilled to join the EA SPORTS team," said Tiger Woods. "I've played video games for many years. The chance to work with the top brand in sports gaming and play a key role in the design of an interactive golf product will be an exciting challenge."
The agreement brings together the best of the best - Tiger Woods, the world's most popular golfer; EA SPORTS, the world's leading interactive sports brand; and the PGA TOUR, the sanctioning body of men's professional tournament golf in the United States. The signing of Tiger Woods represents perhaps the most highly-prized deal in the history of the interactive sports industry.
"Signing Tiger Woods is a defining act for Electronic Arts and the PGA TOUR Golf series," said Richard Hilleman, vice president and executive producer at Electronic Arts. "Tiger is the ultimate competitor who wins with strength, charisma and creativity. He is the embodiment of the EA SPORTS brand and the new world of golf. Tiger will contribute to the design and development of a new EA SPORTS golf game as well as future versions in the PGA TOUR Golf product series. He represents the second generation of co-designers for the EA SPORTS brand and brings a unique perspective as a life long customer of interactive entertainment."
"Tiger has inspired a new legion of golfers and more people are excited about golf since he turned professional than ever before," said Michael Shapiro, NIKE's business manager for the Tiger Woods brand. "NIKE is excited about joining Tiger, EA SPORTS and the PGA TOUR to develop a new medium to benefit sports fans everywhere." Electronic Arts obtained the Tiger Woods license from NIKE, Inc.
"The PGA TOUR has been working exclusively with EA SPORTS for seven years on the interactive PGA TOUR Golf series," said Leo McCullagh, vice president of retail licensing and consumer marketing with the PGA TOUR. "The addition of Tiger Woods to this highly successful PGA TOUR-licensed product line should prove to be a win-win combination for everyone involved. The endeavor will bring even more world-class products to market that capture the essence of the game of golf."
